All system have been restored to their normal functionalities.
We will continue monitoring the situation and complete some cleanup tasks.
Users should be able to resume the use of our computational services.
Please report any additional issue you might be running into.
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 11:19 PMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 11:19 PMUTC
We are making progresses on resuming our computational offering:
OpenOnDemand / Parallel cluster should be operating as normal.
Please feel free to use the service and report any issues you might experienceOn Research Engineering Studio we are still running some maintenance operations to restore full functionality. We hope to be able to restore regular functionalities by tomorrow morning.
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 9:07 PMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 9:07 PMUTC
The underlying AWS infrastructure is recovering. We are still working to repair/test/update some of the services we have control on.
We will extend the maintenance until 8pm. We expect to be able to reopen our services by then.
We will post another update around 7pm.
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 7:17 PMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 7:17 PMUTC
The underlying cloud infrastructure is still affected by problem with some of the services, but the situation is improving.
We will provide further update around 5pm EDT
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 4:13 PMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 4:13 PMUTC
We will extend the maintenance window until 6pm.
Our computational offerings are currently still majorly affected by the AWS outage which is affecting among other services, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.
Currently Research Engineering Studio is not functional, and Parallel cluster can operate on very limited fashion.
We will continue working at restoring functionality. As soon as the underlying AWS services regain the usual stability, we will complete the necessary operations to restore our computational services.
We will provide an update by 3pm EDT.
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 1:53 PMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 1:53 PMUTC
Maintenance work is on hold until we understand the outcome of AWS' current system outages.

MAINTENANCE UPDATE - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
=============================================
Summary: Due to ongoing AWS outages in the us-east-1 region, today's planned maintenance and some of our services are delayed or degraded, and we will update you once we know if maintenance will be extended or rescheduled.
================================================
Details: We want to inform you about an ongoing issue impacting our services this morning. Several cloud services in the AWS us-east-1 region are currently experiencing multiple failures, and AWS is actively investigating and working toward a resolution.
Unfortunately, because our infrastructure relies on these AWS services, we have been unable to proceed with many of our planned maintenance activities scheduled for today. Additionally, our computational and data transfer services are currently unavailable or performing at reduced capacity due to these interruptions at the cloud provider level. Please rest assured that we are closely monitoring the situation and are in continuous contact with AWS as they work to restore normal operations.
We will provide an update as soon as possible regarding the status of today’s maintenance window, originally scheduled from 6am to 12pm ET. At that time, we will advise whether we will be extending this window once services are restored, or if we will need to reschedule maintenance for a later date.
We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience while we navigate this unexpected disruption. Our team remains committed to keeping you informed and minimizing any inconvenience. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at regulated_data_environment@harvard.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
- UpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 10:00 AMUTCUpdateOctober 20, 2025 at 10:00 AMUTC
Please be advised that the Regulated (ReD) Environment will be unavailable Monday, October 20, 2025 from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET, due to scheduled maintenance activities. During this time, we will:
perform important OS updates to shared infrastructure servers,
rebuild and redeploy scientific software containers,
update the reference operating system for the Linux cluster compute nodes,
publish updated software stacks for Research & Engineering Studio (RES) Linux and Windows VDI sessions, and
apply network changes to address excessive lag in authentication to Linux systems.
We may adjust this list as the feasibility of each item is ironed out within the next several days.
As a reminder, regularly scheduled maintenance for the Regulated (RED) environment occurs on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. Our next scheduled maintenance is thus Monday, Nov. 1st.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve your regulated research computing needs.
Respectfully,
The Regulated Data Team
